Front-end collisions are one of the most common types of car crashes in America. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) was developed to help mitigate the damage of these and other serious accidents. The insurance experts at Tri-Star Insurance National City want to share some information on how AEB systems work.
Though drivers can still intervene by applying the brakes like in any other vehicle, sensors are a major component of what makes AEB systems a much safer option. The sensors at the front of a vehicle with an AEB system can detect how close you are to the car ahead of you. These are usually radar or camera-based sensors, and they provide a real-time image of the road. If your car comes too close to another vehicle, the system gives off a warning in the form of a sound, vibration, visual alert, or even a mix of the three. Your car will automatically begin to brake, which is also considered an alert.
An AEB system may work alongside another feature called forward collision warning. This collision mitigating system scans the road ahead of you as you drive and warns you if you’re about to crash into another vehicle. If you don’t respond in time, the AEB system will quickly slow your vehicle down, possibly bringing it to a full stop. Some systems even prepare a vehicle for collision by pretensioning the seatbelts. An AEB system doesn’t always prevent a crash, but it can help lessen the damage. Tests have revealed approximately 53 percent of all rear-end collisions could be mitigated in severity and 35 percent prevented completely.
Earlier this year, 20 major U.S. carmakers committed to making AEB systems standard in all of their models. This is according to a new plan presented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Hopefully, this commitment from carmakers makes American roads much safer.
It’s important to remember AEB systems were designed only as support for drivers in emergency situations. Even if your vehicle has one of these systems, you are still responsible for your driving at all times and should always protect yourself and your property with the right insurance.
