Getting Your Home Ready for Summer

Getting Ready for Summer in San Diego, CA

It’s July, and the San Diego weather is starting to get warmer, which means you may want to start getting your home in shape for the hottest parts of summer. The staff at American Tri-Star, a leading provider of homeowners insurance in Vista, has a few tips to help you get started.

Prepare Your Pool

The sides and bottom of your pool need to be scrubbed down and inspected for cracks. Debris on the surface of the water should be skimmed off. Check the pool’s pumps and filters to make sure they are clean and functioning properly. If you find any leaks, get them repaired immediately. Allow about 3 days for the chlorine level to properly adjust before using your pool. Don’t forget to check your pool’s safety gates and alarm features, especially if you have children in your home.

Check the Sprinkler System

If your sprinkler system has an automatic controller, replace the batteries. Check the sprinkler heads and valves for leaks, which may be apparent from wet patches in the surrounding turf. Take care when turning the water on after the system has been out of use because sudden pressure in the lines can damage the sprinkler heads.

Inspect the AC Unit

Start by changing the filters in your home’s cooling system. During the summer these may require more frequent changes. Clean away any leaves, sticks, or debris around the outside unit and be sure its coils are clean. Turn the unit on to make sure it’s functioning to optimum capacity. If not, call immediately for repairs so you’re not stuck without your AC on a hot day.

Perform a Safety Check in Your Yard

Backyards often get more use in the warmer months. If you have an outdoor playset for children in your yard, check it carefully for any rusty connectors or wood rot. Make sure the structure is securely positioned and that the surrounding area has plenty of cushioning material like wood chips. If you have a fire pit you enjoy using on summer nights, make sure the area around it is clear of dry branches and leaves and that there is plenty of sand nearby for extinguishing the fire after use.

In many instances, making preparations such as these can help you prevent incidents that can lead to home insurance claims.
